Rain, snow and sleet will slog into the Mid-Atlantic region Tuesday.
Snow and sleet, mostly light, are expected in southern Pennsylvania and northern New Jersey.
Although the precipitation may start as a little light snow, it will change over to a messy mix of sleet and freezing rain in western Maryland, northern West Virginia and northwest Virginia.
Numerous winter weather advisories are posted for the area.
Roads may become slick, especially along the I-81 corridor in northwest Virginia into southern Pennsylvania.
Pockets of heavy rain will soak the southern portions of West Virginia and Virginia.
High temperatures will range from the teens in northern Maine to the upper 40s in southern Virginia and West Virginia.
Late Tuesday into Wednesday, snow will overspread New York State and New England. In most areas, the precipitation will change over to sleet and freezing rain, making for a messy day on Wednesday.
Rain will soak much of the southern U.S. Tuesday from far eastern Texas to North Carolina. The heaviest downpours, perhaps 2 or 3 inches, will target areas from Mississippi to the Tennessee-Carolina border.
A line of downpours and scattered severe thunderstorms, in tandem with a cold front, will punch eastward from eastern Texas into Alabama by evening.
High temperatures are expected to be in the 30s and 40s from the Texas Panhandle eastward into northern North Carolinas.
Highs will approach record territory across eastern South Carolina, central and southern Georgia, and much of Florida. These areas will be in the 70s and 80s.
Heavy rain and rising snow levels (leading to melting of snowpacks) will slog into western Washington and northwest Oregon Tuesday. The specter of significant river flooding will increase sharply, especially in western Washington, through midweek.
Meanwhile, more heavy snow will bury the higher Cascades, mountains of Idaho, the Wasatch and Grand Tetons.
Farther south, dry conditions are expected across Southern California, Arizona, and much of New Mexico.
High temperatures are predicted to range from 20s in eastern Montana and the Rockies to the upper 60s in parts of the Southwest.
A mix of light snow, sleet and freezing rain will slide eastward through eastern Illinois, Indiana and Ohio Tuesday.
Winter weather advisories are posted for these areas and some roads may become slippery with a light coating of ice.
In the Ohio Valley and Kentucky, rain will prevail, likely lasting all day.
Farther north, patchy light snow and flurries may dust parts of the Dakotas and Minnesota.
Partly cloudy skies will be found across the Plains.
High temperatures are forecast to range from the teens in the Dakotas and western Minnesota to the mid-40s in the central Plains.
